USTA League Players by State - Interesting tennis league stats

If you've ever wondered which state has the largest number of USTA League players, this is the blog post for you.

Without any more lead-in, here is the chart.

The states are alphabetical starting at 12 o'clock and going clockwise, and we see California leads the way with Georgia in second place narrowly beating out Texas.  The top-10 is rounded out with North Carolina, Colorado, Florida, South Carolina, New York, Virginia, and Ohio.

My state, Washington, is #11 followed by Pennsylvania, Alabama, Louisiana, and Michigan.

I based these counts on the number of players that had a year-end rating for 2014.

Any surprises?

  1. What about ranking based on players per capita? Georgia must be number one on that basis.

  2. Interesting that Illinois isn't in the top 15th despite having the 5th largest population, pretty sure that has to do with weather. Also surprised Florida isn't higher than they are. 3rd in population but sixth on your list. Guess it has to do with age of population.

  3. I'd like to see players by section. I'm wondering why the southern section hasn't been divided into 2 or more sections when you look at the population. FL and TX are both their own sections.

    1. Wow, never noticed that before! Southern section must have twice the numbers of any other section, with NC and GA both having huge numbers and so many other states with at least a decent number of players.

  4. The Southern Section is way to large geographically. GA is 2, NC is 4th, SC is 7th.

The fact that Florida is smaller than both GA and NC and barely ahead of SC and is it's own Section, while CA is divided into two Sections and smaller than GA, NC and SC combined, means the USTA needs to reorganize these Sections IMO.

Make GA it's own Section, like Texas, and combine NC and SC into one Section. NC and SC would have twice the players of FL.

The Southern Section is simply too large and many players like me, refuse to drive or fly to Mobile, AL for Sectionals. It is 10 hours one way or two flights to pretty much inject money into Slow-bile, AL. No thanks.

  5. As a GA player I would love it if GA became it's own section or perhaps combined with Alabama. It would certainly make sense. Combing NC & SC is a great idea as well.

I know teams from Atlanta that turn down sectional bids often due to the travel requirements. It is time for a change.

  6. We asked our section (Southern) how many 3.0 women players their were and we had 14,000. Then they told us there were only 19,000 3.0 women players across all division. No wonder Southern always does well at Nationals.

    1. Southern does have a lot of players in general, 3.0 women included, but I think the 19K across all sections is not accurate. CA, TX, and CO alone have nearly 8K.
