Analyzing 2025 USTA NTRP year-end ratings - Bump rates by level and gender

The 2025 year-end NTRP ratings have been published and that means we get to take a look at how ratings have changed.

In this post I'll take a look at bump rates by level and gender.

First, here are the overall bump rates by level for 2025.

The rates are not dramatically different, but 2025 bump ups are perhaps a little lower with about 12.5% of 3.0s being bumped up compared to nearly 15% in 2024.  At the 3.5 level also slightly lower at 7% versus 7.5%, but 4.0s are right about the same and 4.5s perhaps a little higher.

But doing it by gender is more interesting, here are the women in 2025.

Similar, at 3.5 and below the bump up percentage is down a bit, but at 4.0 and 4.5, perhaps slightly higher.

So at the lower levels, while bump rates remain higher there than at higher levels, the bump rates are trending down slightly from last year.

Analyzing 2023 USTA NTRP year-end ratings - Distribution of players across levels by gender

2023 year-end ratings were published a few days ago and I've started doing my stats with bump rates by section and gender, bump rates by level and gender, strange bumps, and player counts with year-end ratings.  Next up, distribution of players by level and gender.

This analysis looks at the players with year-end C ratings for 2023 and for comparison 2022.  The bar represents the number of players and the annotation is what percentage that number is of the total.

First up, players by level overall.

We see the standard "normal" distribution with just some small changes from last year.  There was some growth in raw numbers at lower levels, 2.5 thru 3.5, but the 4.0 and 4.5 levels shrunk slightly.  However, while there were more 3.5s in 2023, the percentage that are 3.5s went down slightly due to the significant growth of 3.0s.

Since we saw that generally speaking more players are bumped up than down, this is likely due to new players coming in at lower levels and getting year-end ratings while the higher levels perhaps have some players no longer playing USTA League.  I will have to do some analysis on this to see if that is the case.

Next, the distribution of women by level.

Similar story here, but the increased number of 3.0s was a bit larger and the 3.5s slightly less.

Last, the distribution of men by level.

The men had noticeably more 3.0s and 3.5s, but from a percentile distribution standpoint, over 1% fewer 4.0s and nearly 1% fewer 4.5s.

Analyzing 2023 USTA NTRP year-end ratings - Bump rates by level and gender

The 2023 USTA NTRP year-end ratings have been out for just over a day now and I started doing analysis with bump rates by section and gender, now on to slicing it another way, by level and gender.

First, here are the bump rates just by level.

This isn't at all unexpected, lower levels have more bump ups, higher levels have more bump downs.

Breaking it out by gender, first, the women.

The women have slightly more bumps down as the level gets higher, but looks very similar to the general trends.

And here is how the men look.

After seeing the women, as you might expect, much the same, just with fewer bumps down as the level goes up.

Analyzing 2023 USTA NTRP year-end ratings - Section bump rates by gender

The USTA published 2023 year-end NTRP ratings about 24 hours ago, so that means it is time to start doing some analysis to see what we can learn.

To start, we'll look at bump rates overall and by section including by gender.  In all the charts below, it is showing the percentage of players bumped down (purple) or up (green).

First, the overall rates were:

  • Stayed - 84.9%
  • Bumped up - 9.5%
  • Bumped down - 5.6%

This is very consistent with most years.  For the women:

  • Stayed - 84.5%
  • Bumped up - 9.7%
  • Bumped down - 5.7%
And then men:
  • Stayed - 85.6%
  • Bumped up - 9.1%
  • Bumped down - 5.3%
Not a lot of variation, the men are bumped up slightly less than the women, the bump down percentages are about the same.  The number that stayed the same level is down about 1% point from last year.

Here are the overall bump rates by section.

Last year was pretty consistent across sections, but this year is even more so.  Every section had more bumps up than down, between 8 and 10% bumps up and around 5% bumps down.  No section stands out having an abnormally high number of bumps up.  Generally speaking, there were no radical changes to adjustments.

Taking a look at the same stats but by gender, here are the women.

Nothing is remarkably different here.  NorCal does get over 11% bumps up, but still pretty consistent.

And the men.

Texas is the only one over 9% at around 11% and some other variation, but nothing more significant as far as radical changes between sections.

Drilling in to what sections make USTA League Nationals semi-finals the most - Counts by division

USTA League Nationals are over for the Adult leagues and I took a look at how many times each section made the semi-finals overall, now it is time to break it down by division.

First we look at the 18 & Over division.


Southern led the overall totals and leads for 18 & Over too, and Intermountain isn't far behind despite making only one semi this year.  They made a whopping 7 of 11 semi-finals in 2021.

Next, 40 & Over.

Southern leads here too, but Texas is second and three sections are tied behind them.  Texas made the semis in 75% (6 of 8) of the events this year.

Last, 55 & Over.


Southern Cal leads here also going to 75% (6 of 8) of the semis this year, but went to 7 of 8 in 2021!  Southern falls all the way to second.

What sections make the semis at USTA League Nationals the most often? Southern and SoCal lead!

With the Adult Nationals (18 & Over, 40 & Over, and 55 & Over) complete, I thought I'd take a look at how often each of the sections make the semis.

I'll probably end up slicing this data by gender and division, but to start we'll just look at the total across both genders and all three divisions over the past three years (2021-2023).

We see that Southern and SoCal are well ahead of the rest with 41 and 35 appearances respectively, but Midwest, Florida, and Texas make a good showing each with 25 or more semi-final appearances.

All of the sections do show up, although 2022 was the only one of the three years were every section wasn't represented with Southwest missing out.

In the above, i used 2021 thru 2023 as that is post-COVID.  If we look at the three years pre-COVID it is similar, but not the same.

We see Southern still leads with nearly the same total, but Texas and Florida on close behind, SoCal drops down to mid-pack and PNW moves up some.

Still, there is a clear trend of the same handful of Sections consistently making the semis more than the rest, and Southern has been at the top throughout this period.

What do you think?  Is this expected?  Southern is by far the largest section and teams have to go through more playoffs that most other areas to get to Nationals, are they more battle tested?

Or do warm weather sections have an advantage in that players can more easily play year-round and continue to improve or be sharp come Nationals?

Should the USTA do something to give the smaller sections a better chance at making the semis more regularly?

A bit more on the recent WTN algorithm change / adjustment

I wrote a few days ago about the recent significant change to WTN ratings that the USTA sent a notice out about, and many players saw their WTN get larger (worse) overnight, some in the high single digits, but others went up 10 or more.

I don't have any detailed analysis yet, but do have a few more observations.

The USTA published an FAQ about the changes that is worth a quick read, but it had a few interesting explanations.

First, some insight into why the change was made:

These enhancements to the ITF WTN algorithm will reposition cohorts of players on the current scale of 40-1 and ensure that players from all over the world are more accurately aligned, particularly with regard to different age groups. While ratings are likely to be adjusted, players will likely see movement relative to their age group.

So, they seem to have concluded that different age groups of players were rated correctly relative to each other.

Going on, they get more specific:

Adult players aged between 19-29 should expect only minor changes to their ITF World Tennis Number. Larger changes begin to occur for players over 30 years old that regularly play against players of a similar age. Adult players over 30 will see their numbers move down the scale (towards 40), this is to create some balance with Junior players and to ensure full use of the 1-40 scale.

This is consistent with my anecdotal observations that USTA League players around me, for the most part age 30+, have seen their WTN get larger and closer to 40.  I haven't looked at any juniors, but believe their statement to be true.

And from what I see, USTA League players are by and large are all in the mid-20s and higher.  I see 4.5 and 4.0 men in the mid-20s and the majority of league players are at 3.0-4.0, so that means the majority of league players are being squeezed into the 25-40 range.  That is quite a bit less granularity than we had before (15-40) so we will see how that works out.

Regarding juniors, the FAQ states:

Junior players aged 10 and under will most likely experience a movement down the scale, (towards 40) with players who are aged 17 and 18 moving up the scale (towards 1). The player ratings are now more of an accurate reflection of age, with a general incremental increase expected from aged 10 upwards.

I've also heard from players in the UK and US looking at comparisons with players in Europe that prior to this change, there seemed to be a disconnect in that what appeared to be similarly skilled players from Europe and the US had significantly different WTN ratings, those in the US having lower numbers, so this adjustment seems to have addressed that, at least somewhat.

All of this highlights the challenge of a single algorithm that tries to put all tennis players in the world on the same scale.  Whether it is age groups or countries or other geographic grouping, you will inevitably have islands, or cohorts as the FAQ says, that all play each other, but have little to no play with other islands or cohorts.  When this happens, the algorithm has very little data to go on to reasonably ensure players from those different groups are appropriately rated relative to each other.

This is probably the biggest challenge for the WTN, and as such one would have hoped a lot of effort would have gone into reviewing this and getting it right prior to launch.  If adult USTA League players were rated in the teens and similar recreational players from Europe were in the 20s, that should have been one of the first things that was reviewed and stuck out.  Similarly if all juniors regardless of age were clumped together, or juniors relative to adults seemed off, this could have been observed far earlier and address before WTN was launched.

There are ways an algorithm can address this, notably by looking at the matches that are played between the islands of players, and giving them more weight in determining the relative ratings for the group of players they represent.

This is effectively what the USTA does with NTRP, using the matches from Nationals to "connect" the different sections, and have those results and how well a section did trickle down to players from the section.  If a section does very well at Nationals, that means relatively speaking the players from that section at that level were rated too low relative to other sections, so player's ratings may go up and more bump ups will occur.  It can go the other way too, and I've pointed out the effect of this in many of my year-end rating analysis'.

I'm guessing the WTN doesn't inherently do this as part of the algorithm, as it seemingly required this significant adjustment to compensate for what they were observing.  Hopefully they still applied the principals of leveling across cohorts and it wasn't entirely manual.

Another challenge the WTN has, and one that doesn't seem to have been addressed yet and wasn't mentioned in the FAQ is gender neutrality.  The algorithm claims to be gender neutral, i.e. just like a WTN 25 male should have a competitive match with another WTN 25 male, either should also have a competitive match with a WTN 25 female.

It is generally accepted that NTRP which is not gender neutral has about a one level (0.5 NTRP) difference between the genders, e.g. a 3.5 male and 4.0 female will be similarly skilled, but looking at WTN ratings one will regularly see men and women of the same NTRP level with similar WTN ratings or even the women having lower (better) WTN ratings.  Similarly, you will see men with higher (better) NTRP levels having higher (worse) WTN ratings.

This means WTN really can't be used to get cross-gender competitive matches today.  And WTN is really handcuffed now when it gets to trying to solve this as it now has to fit both men and women into this compressed 25-40 range I noted above.

For example, looking at men's WTN ratings, leaving room for the 2.5 and 3.0 women to have higher WTN ratings than 3.0 men, and leaving some room for complete beginners not even playing matches yet, the WTN range all recreational men have to fit into is more like 25-35 at best, and perhaps even less.

The change made to WTN may very well make it better than before.  But the challenges of truly being a world tennis number are still there.  It will be interesting to see how it continues to mature.

Has the ITF updated the WTN algorithm? Is it any better?

I received an e-mail today from the USTA titled "Now Here: Updates to ITF World Tennis Number" and it goes on to describe the ITF on-boarding several new federations, but also says the ITF has taken the opportunity to "enhance the ITF WTN calculation" and as a result player's WTNs may change.

I've written about the WTN before (see a list of all WTN related posts here) and done some analysis (men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles) that raised some questions about its accuracy.  Since then, I haven't written that often as 1) the ITF/USTA have made it difficult to gather data to do analysis and 2) casual monitoring showed the same initial observations still stood.  This new announcement may cause me to revisit things, although it may be hard to do so broadly.

An initial/personal look though reveals there have been some big changes!

I'd had a WTNs of around 13 forever based on singles play from years ago, and checking today, I see my WTNs is now 26.9!  I'd say that is a change.

In doubles, I've been around a 22 WTNd and today, 29.2!

Whoa, overnight I've gotten a lot worse!

For reference, I'm a middling 4.5 playing primarily (only lately) doubles with a few wins in men's this year but more losses, although several were in match tie-breaks.  Even if NTRP were to bump me down to 4.0 at year-end, the new WTN algorithm seems to be saying that I as a 4.0/4.5 male is a 26.9 WTNd.

If this is done across the board and it is consistent, perhaps it is better, relatively at least, but on the surface the mapping between NTRP and WTN seems even worse than before now.  A 4.5 male at 26.9 doesn't leave a lot of room for the 2.5-4.0 players, and there is a lot of room for the 4.5-7.0 players.

Looking at some players around me, I've recently been playing 8.0 mixed with 3.5 women partners, and have done better (4-1 this season) and WTNd had my partners similarly rated to me, around 21-24.  That screams that something is wrong with the gender neutral part of WTN, and this algorithm change as my 3.5 women partners are still similarly rated to me, 28-32 or so.

I'm sure there will be naysayers out there who say I must be playing like a 3.5 woman, perhaps that is true, but then the folks I've beat must be at that level or worse.

So there seems to have been a blanket shift up numerically (down in rating strength as WTN has 1 as the best and 40 as the worst) to give more room for high rated players, but no significant change to making gender neutral relativity more accurate.

I'll try to do some more analysis later, but what are you seeing?  What do you think?  Is WTN even something relevant to you in any way at this point?

Another look at what NTRP rating combinations works best in Mixed 18 & Over? More Interesting Tennis League Stats

I've been looking at how different combinations of levels do in the 55 & Over Adult and 18 & Over Mixed, and just took a deeper dive on 55 & Over, so the same deeper dive on Mixed is in order.

The general observation has been that unbalanced pairs, e.g. a 4.5 and 3.5 in an 8.0 flight, tend to win more often than not, and this deeper dive will take a look at if this is actually expected or not based on the current ratings of the players.

The deeper dive on 55 & Over revealed that while the unbalanced pairs do win more often, they are always expected to, and often fall short of the expected winning percentage.  This may indicate a selection bias of sorts, where it is possible that only stronger players at their level opt to play as an unbalanced pair, thus skewing the stats in their favor, and there is not some inherent advantage to unbalanced pairs.

So on to taking a closer look at Mixed.  Specifically, I narrowed the matches analyzed to only those where I had an established rating for all 4 players and then looked at not just how often unbalanced pairs won, but how often they were expected to win.  The results were certainly interesting, and a bit different from what we saw for 55 & Over.

Note, the actual winning percentages are slightly different from the earlier post because some matches where the players didn't all have ratings have been filtered out.

For each level/gender below, I'm using 2022 18 & Over Mixed league data again and showing the percentage of the time the unbalanced pair won, followed by the percentage of the time the unbalanced pair had the higher combined ratings.  When the actual is higher than the expected, the unbalanced is overachieving, and when the actual is lower than the expected, they are underachieving.

The ratings used for this analysis are my Mixed Exclusive Estimated Dynamic NTRP Ratings I use for doing the various individual, team, and flight reports I offer.  The pairings are showing the male then female levels.

Starting with 6.0:

  • 3.5/2.5 vs 3.0/3.0 - 52.0% actual, 57.1% expected - underachieved
  • 3.5/2.5 vs 2.5/3.5 - 53.7% actual, 41.1% expected - overachieved big
  • 2.5/3.5 vs 3.0/3.0 - 48.0% actual, 59.3% expected - underachieved big

The 6.0 level can be tricky with a lot of new/unknown players at times, but we see the pairs with the higher rated male player win more often, and this is especially true when it is a 3.5 male vs a 2.5 male and the 3.5 male really overachieves vs expected.

But like I said, 6.0 is tricky, so on to 7.0 where players are a little less volatile:

  • 4.0/3.0 vs 3.5/3.5 - 58.7% actual, 56.4% expected - overachieved a bit
  • 4.0/3.0 vs 3.0/4.0 - 56.3% actual, 51.7% expected - overachieved
  • 3.0/4.0 vs 3.5/3.5 - 49.7% actual, 53.3% expected - underachieved

We again see the pair with the higher rated male wins more often, and we also see some over achievement for the 4.0/3.0 pairs.

Next, 8.0:

  • 4.5/3.5 vs 4.0/4.0 - 57.8% actual, 54.9% expected - overachieved
  • 4.5/3.5 vs 3.5/4.5 - 52.4% actual, 48.9% expected - overachieved
  • 3.5/4.5 vs 4.0/4.0 - 54.2% actual, 53.2% expected - overachieved a bit

The trend of unbalanced pairs overachieving continues by a decent 3-4% margin for the 4.5/3.5 pairs.

Next, 9.0:

  • 5.0/4.0 vs 4.5/4.5 - 61.6% actual, 53.6% expected - overachieved big
  • 5.0/4.0 vs 4.0/5.0 - 59.1% actual, 55.0% expected - overachieved
  • 4.0/5.0 vs 4.5/4.5 - 56.6% actual, 54.6% expected - overachieved a bit

The over achievement for unbalanced pairs is seen here too.

The counts for 10.0 are so low there is no point to doing the analysis here.

Given we see some to significant over achievement for the unbalanced pairs, especially at the higher levels, it may be that there is an inherent advantage in Mixed.  This is perhaps because at higher levels, players are able to employ strategies maximizing the difference in abilities taking advantage of having the stronger player.

It could also be that for the lower level player of unbalanced pairs, only the top players at that level self-select to play, and that gives an inherent ratings advantage over two "average" players on a balanced pair.

Another look at what NTRP rating combinations works best in Adult 55 & Over? More Interesting Tennis League Stats

A few days ago I took at look at what ratings combinations win the most in 55 & Over Adult league play.  What I found was consistent with earlier analysis I've done and that is that unbalanced pairs, e.g. a 4.0/3.0 pair in 7.0, beat balanced pairs, e.g. a 3.5/3.5, more than they lose.

What some pointed out, and I knew I wanted to do more research into, is that while the unbalanced pairs win more, that may be because of a selection bias of sorts, where it is possible that only stronger players at their level opt to play as an unbalanced pair, and the fact they win more often may be expected.  It is even possible that while they win more than lose, they may not win as often as expected.

For example, at 7.0, it may be that it is the strong 3.0s that are attracted to play or perhaps are recruited to play.  That means when they (say a 2.90 3.0) partner with an average 4.0 (3.75) vs two average 3.5s (3.25), the rating comparison is 6.65 vs 6.50, and the unbalanced pair has the higher combined ratings and thus is arguably expected to win.  Even if the 3.5s are a bit better (3.30) it is still 6.65 vs 6.60.

With that in mind, I went about digging deeper.  Specifically, I narrowed the matches analyzed to only those where I had an established rating for all 4 players and then looked at not just how often unbalanced pairs won, but how often they were expected to win.  The results were certainly interesting, if not a bit surprising.

Note, the actual winning percentages are slightly different from the earlier post because some matches where the players didn't all have ratings have been filtered out.

For each level/gender below, I'm using 2022 55 & Over Adult league data again and showing the percentage of the time the unbalanced pair won, followed by the percentage of the time the unbalanced pair had the higher combined ratings.  When the actual is higher than the expected, the unbalanced is overachieving, and when the actual is lower than the expected, they are underachieving.

The ratings used for this analysis are my Estimated Dynamic NTRP Ratings I use for doing the various individual, team, and flight reports I offer.

For the women:

  • 6.0 - 3.5/2.5 vs 3.0/3.0 - 48.7% actual, 54.7% expected - underachieved
  • 7.0 - 4.0/3.0 vs 3.5/3.5 - 54.6% actual, 54.5% expected - nearly perfectly as expected
  • 8.0 - 4.5/3.5 vs 4.0/4.0 - 56.2% actual, 62.3% expected - underachieved
  • 9.0 - 5.0/4.0 vs 4.5/4.5 - 66.9% actual, 73.7% expected - underachieved

Here we see the selection of matches change the actual percentages slightly, and at 6.0 the unbalanced actually lost slightly more than they won, but at three of the four levels, while the unbalanced won more, they were expected to win more than they did, so arguably underachieved.

For the men:

  • 6.0 - 3.5/2.5 vs 3.0/3.0 - 58.6% actual, 58.6% expected - exactly as expected
  • 7.0 - 4.0/3.0 vs 3.5/3.5 - 55.6% actual, 51.1% expected - overachieved
  • 8.0 - 4.5/3.5 vs 4.0/4.0 - 55.4% actual, 56.3% expected - slightly underachieved
  • 9.0 - 5.0/4.0 vs 4.5/4.5 - 50.9% actual, 55.2% expected - underachieved

Here the actual percentages vary a bit more with the selected matches, especially at 9.0.  And we also see that at 6.0 it is exactly as expected, the unbalanced overachieve at 7.0, but 8.0 has a slight underachieve and 9.0 a significant underachieve.

So, it may not be quite as clear cut as the earlier analysis showed.  While unbalanced pairs do win more than they lose, it appears it is because it is the right unbalanced pairs are playing and they are expected to win because they are higher rated overall, not just because they are an unbalanced pair.  And they may not even win as often as expected.

What NTRP rating combinations works best in Mixed? More Interesting Tennis League Stats

I wrote yesterday about what ratings combinations work best for 55 & Over Adult play, today, I thought I'd start a refresh of the ratings combination analysis for Mixed I did around 8 years ago.

To start, I'll look at 18 & Over Mixed.  For reference, here is the post I did 8 years ago for the same division.

This time I will include 6.0 and 10.0 levels I omitted last time.  For each pairing I list, the first number will be the male level and the second the female level.

Starting with 6.0:

  • 3.5/2.5 pairs beat 3.0/3.0 pairs 52.7% of the time
  • 2.5/3.5 pairs beat 3.0/3.0 pairs 49.6% of the time
  • 3.5/2.5 pairs beat 2.5/3.5 pairs 56.2% of the time

Here, a slight to significant advantage to unbalanced when the male is the higher rated player.  The 2.5/3.5 is ever so slightly below 50%.

Next up, 7.0:

  • 4.0/3.0 pairs beat 3.5/3.5 pairs 58.3% of the time
  • 3.0/4.0 pairs beat 3.5/3.5 pairs 50.8% of the time
  • 4.0/3.0 pairs beat 3.0/4.0 pairs 55.1% of the time

This is similar to before (60%, 52%, 57%) so that form continues to hold.  Unbalanced with the higher rated male has the advantage, but unbalanced with the higher rated female has a slight advantage too.

Next up, 8.0:

  • 4.5/3.5 pairs beat 4.0/4.0 pairs 57.6% of the time
  • 3.5/4.5 pairs beat 4.0/4.0 pairs 53.5% of the time
  • 4.5/3.5 pairs beat 3.5/4.5 pairs 51.7% of the time

This is a bit different from last time (61%, 51%, 60%) with the unbalanced 3.5/4.5 pairs doing better than before.  Still, unbalanced has the advantage over balanced and unbalanced with the higher rated male stronger overall.

And 9.0:

  • 5.0/4.0 pairs beat 4.5/4.5 pairs 59.6% of the time
  • 4.0/5.0 pairs beat 4.5/4.5 pairs 56.1% of the time
  • 5.0/4.0 pairs beat 4.0/5.0 pairs 58.5% of the time
This compares with 57%, 58%, 51% last time, so a bit different, but the trend holds.  Unbalanced with more frequently, and the unbalanced with the higher rated male do so over the higher rated female.

Last, 10.0:

  • 5.5/4.5 pairs beat 5.0/5.0 pairs 27.0% of the time
  • 4.5/5.5 pairs beat 5.0/5.0 pairs 62.9% of the time
  • 5.5/4.5 pairs beat 4.5/5.5 pairs 66.7% of the time

Note there is so little play at this level that some of the totals for these match-ups are in the single digits so make of that what you will.

Aside from a couple anomalies at the 6.0 and 10.0 levels, the trend continues.  Unbalanced pairs win more often in Mixed.  The advantage is not huge, most of these winning percentages are between 50% and 60%, but it is consistent.

What NTRP rating combinations works best in Adult 55 & Over? More Interesting Tennis League Stats

A popular discussion topic for USTA League teams that use combo-levels is what the best pairings are.  I've looked at this a number of years ago for Mixed, but thought it would be interesting to take a look at Adult 55 & Over.

The candidate leagues in this case are the 55 & Over Adult leagues with 6.0, 7.0, 8.0, and 9.0 flights where players up to a full two levels apart can play together.  For example, in 8.0 the playing combinations can be 3.5/4.5, 4.0/4.0, and 4.5/3.5.  The fundamental question is, when different pairings face each other, which wins more often?

Note for this analysis I'm only considering "at-level" pairings and not those where say a 3.5 and 4.0 play together as a "7.5" pair in an 8.0 flight.

I've done this before for Mixed, both 18 & Over and 40 & Over and in nearly every case, unbalanced pairs win more often than balanced pairs, generally between 52% and 60% depending on the exact scenario.  Mixed also has different genders to add to the permutations but the strongest tends to be unbalanced with the male the higher level player where that pair wins around 60% of the time.

What I did was to take a look at Adult 55 & Over matches from 2022 and broke it out by both gender and level.

For the women:

  • 6.0 - 3.5/2.5 pairs beat 3.0/3.0 pairs 51% of the time
  • 7.0 - 4.0/3.0 pairs beat 3.5/3.5 pairs 55% of the time
  • 8.0 - 4.5/3.5 pairs beat 4.0/4.0 pairs 57% of the time
  • 9.0 - 5.0/4.0 pairs beat 4.5/4.5 pairs 66% of the time

We see unbalanced pairs have the advantage, very slight at 6.0 but growing as the level goes up.

For the men:

  • 6.0 - 3.5/2.5 pairs beat 3.0/3.0 pairs 57% of the time
  • 7.0 - 4.0/3.0 pairs beat 3.5/3.5 pairs 56% of the time
  • 8.0 - 4.5/3.5 pairs beat 4.0/4.0 pairs 56% of the time
  • 9.0 - 5.0/4.0 pairs beat 4.5/4.5 pairs 57% of the time

The men are very consistent at 56-57% of the time the unbalanced pair wins.

This is pretty consistent with the Mixed results, unbalanced pairs win more often.  They theory is that the unbalanced pairs generally have the strongest player and if they employ a strategy to minimize the lower rated partner's weaknesses, the stronger player rises to the top.  At 55-57% for most scenarios it is obviously not a given that unbalanced pairs will win, but the trend is pretty clear.

USTA League Mixed Participation - A preliminary look at some USTA League statistics for 2023

 I've been doing some mid-year looks at participation for 2023 to get a preliminary idea of what any continued recover post-COVID there is or if the general decline we've observed since 2013 may be continuing.  I even took a look by section, first warm weather sections, then the rest, and saw some sections are declining faster, and a few have actually shown growth.

In doing that analysis, I looked at only the main Adult advancing leagues as I've done that each year and it provides consistency for comparing things year to year.  I thought it would be interesting to also look at Mixed, so this post will dive into that.

For this analysis I'm looking at unique participants during the USTA rating year in the 18 & Over or 40 & Over Mixed leagues.  This is unique participants, not total registrations, so someone playing in both leagues or multiple levels will be counted just once.

Also, since the USTA had a 2-year rating period for 2020/2021 due to COVID, I'm grouping those as a single "year".  As you  might expect, when I've looked at them individually in the past, 2020 was way down, and 2021 recovered some but not all the way to 2019 (or 2022) levels.

Here are the overall participation stats for Mixed!

This may be the first time I've done this for Mixed, so we actually get a view into the years from 2013 and on to see how it compares with the trend in Adult.  From 2013 to 2018, Adult dropped about 7-8% and here it is similar, although the bulk of the drop was in 2018.  There was a slight recovery in 2019 like Adult leagues also saw, but Mixed was a bit larger.  Combining the COVID years also shows a greater bump than Adult, and then a similar drop in 2022.  So overall Mixed participation very much mirrors Adult.

What is interesting is that 2023 is way behind 2022 at this point.  That is alarming at first, but a number of sections run Mixed leagues either in the Summer so just starting, or as early start leagues so still to be played, so much of that gap is due to that.

Another observation is that Mixed obviously requires the same number of men and women on the court, but every so slightly more women participate than men.  My observation locally is that to ensure player availability, teams often have more women than men, so this seems to back that up.

Next, I went ahead and looked at unique participants across Adult and Mixed.  Adult showed 275K in 2013 and Mixed shows 91K, so do these get added together?  Alas no as many players play both so only get counted once when looking at the combined stats.

Since the trends are similar in each category by themselves, combined we see the same trend.

It is interesting that in 2013 the combined number is 296K which tells us that about 21K appear to have played Mixed but not Adult that year.  In 2022 it was 243K in Adult and 262K combined so about 19K playing only Mixed.

A preliminary look at some USTA League statistics for 2023 - Overall participation by Section - The rest of the sections

I've started taking a preliminary look at some participation numbers from USTA League play for 2023 and started with the overall numbers, now I'm digging in to look at the numbers by section.

As a reminder, I'm looking at participation only in the advancing leagues for consistency across the years.  This means if participation is up or down in Mixed or Tri-Level or other alternate leagues, the charts I create won't show that.

And I'll stress again that the 2023 numbers are preliminary, they can and will go up, in part based on where league play is to date, and also if a section will have early start leagues in the Fall.  But I think it is still interesting to see where they stand right now.

I already looked at the warm weather sections, now the rest of them.  Will these have significant different participation and/or have gotten a COVID bump from the additional players the TIA and USTA tell us picked up the game?

We'll go sort of largest to smallest starting with the largest of these sections, Midwest.

Midwest kind of follows the National trend to a point, but did not get a COVID 2-year period bump, dropped further in 2022, and is way down so far for 2023.  At this rate, they may not be the largest of this group of sections much longer.

Next up, Intermountain.

Intermountain has been close to flat, did get a little COVID 2-year period bump, then a small drop in 2022.  2023 still has a bit to match 2022.

Next, Mid-Atlantic.


A "national following" trend for the most part.  The 2-year COVID period was flat though, and a significant drop in 2022, although 2023 is looking close to the same.

Next, New England.

New England was flat through 2019, but struggled in 2020/2021 and dropped further in 2022.  2023 may still match 2022.

Next, Eastern.

This was mostly flat through 2019, but was hit hard by COVID and recovered slightly in 2022, but 2023 is behind so far.

Next, the Pacific Northwest.

This section had shown some very small growth through 2019, one of the few to do so, but was hit by COVID and 2022 fell a bit more.  2023 is looking pretty good in comparison though.

Next, Middle States.

Just a slight drop through 2019 here, a little hit from COVID but 2022 inched up, but 2023 is behind.

Next, Missouri Valley.



Very flat through 2019, but really saw a bump during the 2-year COVID period, and 2022 remained up from 2019.  2023 may match it by the end too.

Last, Northern.

Pretty flat to even a little  growth through 2019, but 2022 dropped and 2023 has dropped even more it appears.

Any surprises from what you see?  While all are warm weather sections. several have had significant drops, much more drastic than the national average, while Southwest, SoCal, and Florida have shown some modest gains.

A preliminary look at some USTA League statistics for 2023 - Overall participation by Section - The warm weather sections

I've started taking a preliminary look at some participation numbers from USTA League play for 2023 and started with the overall numbers, now I'm digging in to look at the numbers  by section.

In this post I'll take a look at the warm weather sections.  One might think that the sections where players can play pretty much year-round would be the most likely to maintain participation and/or have gotten a COVID bump from the additional players the TIA and USTA tell us picked up the game.

We'll go sort of largest to smallest starting with the largest section, Southern.


First, in 2013 there were right at 80K players that played in Southern.  Given the overall number was around 275K, that means nearly 30% of player participation comes from a single section!  That means whatever the trend is in Southern will likely have a significant impact on the overall stats.

And we do see that there is a general decline down to just over 70K in 2018/2019/2022 and so far, 2023 is still several thousand short of that.

Next up, Texas.


Texas had a small drop through 2019, but had the 2-year COVID bump and then back to 2019 levels in 2022.  2023 is behind but still time to make up the gap.

Next up, Northern California.


Northern Cal showed a similar drop from 2013 to 2019, around 12%, but unlike Southern had a significant drop for 2020/2021 even combining the years.  2022 was down even more, although 2023 has already gotten to 2022 levels.

Next, another warm weather section, Florida.


Here we see the decline from 2013 to 2016, but since then an increase, and a large increase in the combined 2020/2021 COVID rating period.  2022 was up significantly from 2019, so it will be interesting to see if 2023 ends up matching it by year end.

Next we go to the rest of California, Southern Cal.


Here we see growth from 2013 and forward!  2020/2021 had a slight dip despite being a 2-year period and 2022 was down a bit more, but 2023 is already up slightly over 2022.

The last three are some of the smallest sections starting with Southwest.


Southwest was pretty flat from 2013 and on with very modest growth in 2017-2019 over 2013 levels.  It did have the bump from the 2-year period then back to about the prior years level in 2022.  2023 is still a bit behind but there is time to make it up.

Next, Hawaii.


Hawaii does show a pretty significant drop over the years, about 17% from 2013 to 2019, and was significantly hit during COVID and 2022 was down a bit more.  Still time for 2023 to match 2022 but right now, it is down more.

Last, Caribbean.


Here we see pretty flat numbers from 2013 to 2017, but then a significant drop, and COVID has a big impact with 2022 down even more.  2023 is looking better though already.

Any surprises from what you see?  While all are warm weather sections. several have had significant drops, much more drastic than the national average, while Southwest, SoCal, and Florida have shown some modest gains.

A preliminary look at some USTA League statistics for 2023 - Overall participation

It is mid-June and the calendar year is almost half over, and with it league play is in full force or even into the post-season in some areas.  That means for the most part players have signed up for teams and are playing and we can begin to take a look at some USTA League stats for 2023.

This will be a sequence of several posts as there is too much to fit into one.  To start, I'll take a look at overall participation.

For reference, here is my post from late last year looking at this metric through the end of 2022 where I also discuss different ways of looking at 2020/2021 COVID years.  I won't rehash that here and just show 2020 and 2021 as a combined single 'year' since that is how the USTA treated it for rating purposes and I'm using rating years for this analysis.  That does cause that 2 year period to look a bit high in comparison to other single year periods, but it is what it is.

Here is preliminary 2023 unique player participation in the main Adult leagues.


The year is obviously not over yet, players could still sign-up and play on 2023 teams, and some areas will have early start leagues for 2024 play during the 2023 rating year so the 2023 participation number will go up, but there is a pretty substantial drop right now from just over 243K in 2022 to just over 222K this year.  And the drop is across both women and men in about equal percentages.

To compare apples to apples, I looked at what participation was in 2022 through June 19 and that number was 227K, so 2023 is only 5K behind at this point.  If that gap remains at the end of the year, it would be somewhat consistent with, but on the higher end, of the general trend you can see in the chart above.  Most years have seen about a 3K decrease, but a few have been higher or lower than that, and only 2019 showing a real increase (about 1K).

It would seem then that participation in the main Adult USTA Leagues continues to decline.  We'll see where we end up at at the end of the year.

How accurate are Dynamic NTRP ratings at predicting tennis matches? 2022 edition - Interesting League Stats

It has been awhile since I took a look at how accurate my Estimated Dynamic Ratings are at predicting match results so I thought I'd take a look at how they did in 2022.

As a reminder, if you are interested in getting a detailed report using my ratings, see this post.

For this analysis, I'm looking at all matches played in 2022 in the 18 & Over, 40 & over, and 55 & Over divisions.  Unlike before, I'm going to slice the data a few different ways.

Note, these are my dynamic ratings, that largely mirror what the USTA does with their ratings but are not the USTA's ratings, so any accuracy or claims regarding predicting matches is for my ratings and not the USTA's.

First, here are the winning percentages by the higher rated player/pair across all the divisions for all matches, and then broken down by the difference between the ratings as well as singles and doubles.

These percentages are remarkably consistent with the past analysis I did.  The matches between closely rated players are close to 50/50 but the higher rated player/pair does win a little more often.  As the gap grows, the higher rated player/pair wins increasingly often.

Interestingly, the doubles percentages are generally slightly higher.  Perhaps that is due to more players on the court making it less likely that one player being really on or off has as much effect.

Taking a look at just the 18 & Over division:

This division is doubles only, and these percentages are basically the same as the doubles stats for the other divisions.

So it appears the ratings predict match results very consistently regardless of division, which should be the case for a good rating system.  So perhaps my ratings are sound and a good rating system!

Dissecting the USTA"s 2022 tennis participation press release

Each year, the USTA has a press release or post discussing a variety of participation numbers.  This year was no different with the headline being that participation grew for a third straight year.  There are many ways to look at tennis participation, so this deserves a closer look to see what exactly grew.

Those that are regular readers of this blog know that I take a look at USTA League participation each year and there has been a general decline in the number of players playing in the main 18 & Over, 40 & Over, and 55 & Over leagues.  However, depending on how you look at 2020/2021 since league play was suspended and there were no Nationals in 2020, there has been some growth in league participation after a big drop due to COVID.  Regardless of how you look at it though, even if participation in 2022 was up from 2021, 2022 was down from 2019 (258K down to 242K) and on a similar or even quicker trajectory to prior years.

So how can the USTA claim participation grew for three straight years?  The answer is that they are using a different metric than league participation.  The number they are using is from the Tennis Industry Association (TIA) that is estimating the number of people that play tennis in the US irrespective of being part of any organized league or tournament.  The TIA is saying that 23.6 million people played tennis in 2022, up 5.9 million from the start of 2020.  I believe the TIA bases their estimate on reported sales of tennis balls or other similar sales metrics, and much of the increase is attributed to COVID and how tennis was a safe sport to play and the population has flocked to it.

You'd think that an additional 5.9 million players (33% growth) over three years would result in a larger group of players that would be interested in USTA League play, but my numbers show a decrease from 2019 of 6.2%.  Now, if the TIA's numbers are correct, the percentage of the playing population that plays USTA League is barely over 1%, so one wouldn't necessarily expect a strong correlation.  Clearly, the vast majority of tennis is not played as a part of USTA League.

That said, the USTA stated that 284K players played USTA League in 2022 and that is different from my number of 242K.  Why is that?  My number is looking at just the main Adult leagues as that is something I can do consistently from year to year.  I'm assuming the USTA's number is using all leagues and so it is larger.  By my count the number of unique players in all leagues is just over 284K as well, so I have no argument with that number and it appears accurate.

The USTA also touts 2022 having an 11% increase over 2021 and that too seems accurate by my numbers as my main Adult league count went up just over 10% and these are very close.  And 2021 was up over 2020 which is no surprise as 2020 was way down due to COVID.  It is likely that at least some of the growth in 2022 was due to 2021 still being down due to COVID and more players coming back.

The key thing is that 2022 is still short of 2019.  Whether that is because the general decline in USTA League participation has continued, or we are still suffering from the effects of COVID remains to be seen.  One would think that 2022 didn't have many players still staying away from league play due to COVID but perhaps there were some.  The league participation numbers for 2023 will go a long ways to answering the question of if the pre-2019 decline is continuing, or if the USTA can capitalize on the additional tennis playing population and convert some to league play.

While writing this blog, it occurred to me that there is another metric that could be tracked, and that is the number of players that receive a year-end rating each year.  This will include more players than my main Adult league metric as it will include Mixed and Tournament players as well as players that play in alternate leagues that count for ratings.  It won't count players that play Combo or other leagues that don't count for ratings, won't count tournament players that play non-sanctioned or non-NTRP tournaments, and won't include players that don't get the minimum three matches played.

The result of this is a metric the USTA doesn't want to publicize at is falls well short of some of the aforementioned metrics.  I show just 231K players that had a 2022 year-end rating and this was down 8.0% from the 2021 number of 251K.  This is well below the USTA's 284K and below my 242K as well.  This means that just over 50 thousand league players play leagues that don't count for ratings, or didn't play enough matches to get a year-end rating.

Note that 2021 was up 2.7% over 2019's 245K, but keep in mind that 2021 covered a 2 year period which would inherently inflate the number.

Here is the full chart for the past 10 years.

Here we see the slow but steady decline with a slight bump up in 2019 and another in the 2-year period 2021, but a drop to a level lower than any other year in 2022.  And the drop is a similar percentage for both women and men.

So, was there growth in general tennis participation?  Yes, if you believe the TIA.  But has that transferred to adult play in USTA League and those players getting year-end ratings?  It doesn't appear so, at least yet.

Will the significant growth the TIA reports in the tennis playing population find its way to USTA League play in 2023?
